MALACCA August 2003                                                                                                                                                                              BACK

Malacca, only my 2nd visit there! the first trip was done with Uncle Ulrick, Auntie Amy n family. tis time around, i went there by bus alone 2 meet my friends, Liza and Jeh Ling. jeh ling actually requested me to buy the ATI RADEON 9800PRO graphic card in Singapore. Since I also want to check out the progress of the Malacca river side, I decided to go and have a look. Unfortunately when I reached there, I hardly seen anything, all I saw was just some columns and structural integrations. It seems that the project is very still at its initial stage.

By the way, the last time around, I only managed to visit some very limited places because we were just there for the morning and afternoon and going back Singapore after that. I managed to visit a few buildings that I learnt in my South East Asian architecture. Anyway, I will showcase photo albums of my visit for the second time with graphics down below. I went to Malacca for only 1 day plus so I can only do limited things there. We went to a kopitiam setting in a shophouse at the old town at Jonker Street to try the local food.

Malacca version of curry puff                                         Rojak

Chendol with thick coating of gula malacca, u will think it was chocolate on top, I don't mind gula malacca, but excessive use of brown sugar also make me sick

The old shophouse renovated into a kopitiam, it is just beside a courtyard

Malacca's most famous sugar! (Brown sugar) 1 Kilo = RM8.50

Black 'Chuk Bee' eaten by my friend, Jeh Ling because he said he HATES gula malacca

We also went to eat satay celup at a roadside store which is fully packed. It is Lok Lok Penang style but with the sauce of curry in steamboat style. Very mixed but interesting style. The only downside of this eating method is that the table is so filled with different selections you don't even have room to put your elbows or drinks, not to mention to order any food from other stores. The very uneasy thing is that the shop owner or other customers from different tables who want a certain food that is not on their table will come over your table and ask for it. I feel that we don't have any privacy to eat in such situations. Suddenly, people interrupt you to enquire some dishes to be taken away from your table, then the shopkeeper will bring over some other dishes. Sometimes there is no enquiries at all and they just moved their hands to your table and took it/them away. The space is very minimum so really feel suffocated inside the store.

The 'steamboat buffet lok lok with curry' or in short, satay celup with only some of the ingredients visible

We went to the new town the next day because I forced them two to bring me to eat the local Baba and Nyonya food. Both of them already in Malacca more than 4 years and still dare to tell me that they don't know where to get the best Baba and Nyonya food! hehe! but nevertheless, they know the area where all these stores are located. Thus, we reached the street and soon checked out the shops. Now, how do we select which one to go? Well, just crushed into the shop and survey the amount of people inside to have a clue of the popularity of the place. We went in the first one and it is so cold, no customers and only a table that had been reserved. I wonder that was being done themselves, haha! but you can't imagine yourself eating at such a quiet place, you can even hear yourself eating! So, we go from 1 to another, until we reached the 4th one and was satisfied that it has the most customers. In fact, it was almost packed. Ole Sayang it is then!

Rice in cool basket, the basket made it feel little, but as you scoop for rice, you realize the deepness and the amount of rice they have!

I think it is taufu                                                             Chicken

Fish

Nice meal, I love the sweet and sour Nyonya food, but not everyday. Actually we ended the whole meal with another serving of chendol gula malacca because we saw all the other tables are having them before they left. So, we as KIASU as possible also wanted it! haha! It was a very small bowl but the chendol is much better than the one I had at Jonker Street because the mixture of gula malacca inside is just nice.

Before I left for KL, we went around town for a spin. I took some photo of the town.

The meeting point, a very unique feature in Malacca, this one shows the time of the day.

This one shows the temperature.                                    I bought some pineapple tarts from Jonker Street to KL for Uncle Andrew and family.

I just want to take this opportunity to thank Jeh Ling and Liza for being great Malacca tour guides, haha! I got to travel around eating FREE FOOD! haha! Thank you guys! I appreciate your sincerity and will always welcome your visits to Singapore. I am sure I gained some weight in Malacca! haha!
