CHAPTER 20
!
MARADONA’S
TOP 100
There
are so many players that spring to mind that to form a team and
say who's
delighted and who's disappointed me...it's too difficult, it is
easier
just to mention a few names. This is not strictly a Top 100, the
numbers
have been stuck in so you don't have to count them all
1... PELE
As a player
he had it all but didn’t make the most of it to raise the
status
of football. I’d have liked to see him put himself forward as President
of an association to defend players' rights like I did. I’d like to have
seen him look after Garrincha and not let him die in misery. I’d like to
see him fight the rich and powerful that are damaging football |
2... ROBERTO
RIVELINHO
I always
mention him as one of the greatest and lots of people are surprised. I’ve
no idea why...He was in the Brazilian team headquarters in Mexico ’70 just
lounging around because those guys didn’t need to do anything to be able
to play. And there he
was sitting
around with Gerson and Tostao... So Pelé turns up and they thought,
“What can we say to this black bastard? He does everything right the son
of a bitch! And Rivelinho, who always had an answer for everything, came
up with an idea. He stared straight at Pelé, the best player in
the world and said, “Be honest. You’d have liked to have been left-footed,
wouldn’t you? |
