Life, Death and the Afterdeath

ii) Life, Death and the Afterdeath.

Seth remembered that day well. When he first opened his eyes with a new wonder, back in the forest of Nod. The pain was deep that day but the power he felt within was greater as he became that which Caine had promised. Seth was the first, the most powerful of Caine's Kindred, but over the years he had created more, as had Seth. They had long since moved to the far side of the Forest of Nod, away from the village so as to grow in numbers. Now there were sixteen of them, one big happy family, there was Caine, who had 'created' only 3, Seth, Jhonen and Troupe, who each in turn had 'created' four each. Seth's Kindred, by far the most worthy in Caine's eye, were alwasy carefully selected by Seth, Jhonen and Troupe tended to just pick at anyone they could. Nonetheless, all of them were trult beasts within themselves, feasting almost every night on travelleres and locals alike. It was only Seth who saw the carelessness of their ways, eventually people wouldnt come near where they feast, and then they'd have to move. Strangely Caine didn't notice this. He seemed to be blissfully unaware that they would need to move, again and again, in order to survive. It had been only two years since Seth had turned and already he seemed to realise more about the 'Kindred' than his master, Caine.

He sat pondering, as often he did, on the edge of the forest gazing out at the long stretch on the othersid eof the forest from Grensa.

"Seth?" a voice almost whipsered behind him

he turned "Oh, Nona.. hello."

Nona was his favourite Kindred, she had been living in a small town a few miles away from the forest and making a living as a thief, Seth hadnt even intended to Feast, let alone sire another Kindred, that night but the sheer majesty of Nona captivated him. She was fairly short and slim with long blackest of black hair and the darkest of dark brown eyes, she wore nothing but black, seemingly extremely proud that she was now a creature of the night, it was very easy to be caught with your thoughts wandering when Nona was around.

"What are you thinking, Master?" Nona queried, making herself at home next to Seth

"Oh, I'm just wondering how long this will be our home..."

"You always worry" she laughed "No-one will ever realise we live here, we hunt far and wide so they can never realise that we live right here, we could live here forever"

"You underestimate people, Nona" Seth sighed "My people in Grensa have long since known of Caine's existence, and our number is growing too fast to stay hidden"

Nona smiled and put her arm around Seth "When the day comes that we need to move, we'll just do it... I don't see the problem"

Seth smiled back, reasuringly, but deep inside thought of his family, he hadn't seen his son or wife for just over two years. He wouldn't be able to bare moving from this place.

He looked out to the hills to the west, the sun was now compeletley down, the time when Vampires felt most aware, it was time for one of them to find fresh blood.

There he sat. Same as every night, reading through every book in the church's library, searching and searching. For some glimmer of hope. Trying to match the symbol in his mind to some holy significance. The Priest looked on with apraisal, it was not often that a young boy such as he had such dedication. He smiled and went about his cleaning work as the boy read desperately through as many books as he could in the night. Tonight was different, however, tonight he would find out what took his father....

In only a few hours of study, rather than his full night's reading he sprinted out of the church to the Blacksmiths house, waking him up from a peaceful sleep.

"what is it my son?" the Blacksmith looked, only mildly, sympathetic.

"Sir, I apologise for my intrusion, but I need to ask of you a favour"

"Why, certainly Enosh..." the blacksmith looked at the book ENosh was holding up to him "you want that sword?"

"Well, not that one specifically, i just need one with this marking..." he pointed

"No problem my son, come back here tomorrow afternoon and i'll have it ready for you..."

Enosh leaped on to his fathers old horse and galloped off home happy that he had finally found what that beast was....
