Lota :

Lota was born in india in 1950, she is 50 years old. When she was four years old she was trapped, taken from her family and sold to a zoo in Winconsin. She spent years in a small concrete stall. In 1960 the zoo sent her to the Hawthorn Corporation, a company that has made millions of dollars from from elephant slavery. For years she was chained in a large dark shed with other elephants. Many of the elephants got sick with tuberculosis, a painful disease of the lungs. Two of the elephants she lived with were forced to perform up until their deaths. Lota also suffered with turberculosis. In 1996 she was sent to perform at the Walker Bros Circus.

Hawthorn Corporation, owned by John Cuneo, still owns Lota  and leases her to the Walker Bros Circus. Recent photos show that Lota is very thin. Experts believe that she may still be sick. Peta is working hard so that Lota can be "retired" and sent to the elephant sanctuary in Hohenwald. Tenn. There she would be free from her chains and able to finally roam hundreds of acres of natural habitat, eat delicious food and spend her time with six other elephants who enjoy life at the sanctuary.
