stepped aside and bought a ticket to the mess
crunched my popcorn while you
chewed off her ear

with your lips drooling in my coke
I ran my fingers through your salty hair

you fixed the race for the next round,
the next day
the next pace
we deceived
we relieved and then we
rang the bell
chaste

and then she ran out and bought a bucket of bells
to clang and bang around
grabbing your attention away from
your newly solid ground

I signed up for
paid admission for
went into debt for
this ride

but every time she stains it
I die a little inside
you cry a little and hide
we vie for the past
that doesn't matter to our lines cast
this is a new play
a new game today
you've got to pick yourself up this time

I meant even when you fall
why can't you remember that truth
when she's overcasting with squalls

you don't need to go backwards
just to move forwards

reach out for that life
that shine
and this time try to stay safe at home
