The Poor, Poor Sox
Red Sox Sold to the Yankees
In the year 1918, the Red Sox won the world series with an incredible team. At this point the Sox had won 5 World Series and no one knew when they would stop. They had Harry Hooper, Carl Mays, Joe Wood and Dutch Leonard all at one time. Unfortunately, in 1920, a man named Harry Frazee owned the Red Sox and decided that he needed money for a broadway play and sold many of his players to the Yankees, who at that point had not won one World Series. Harry Hooper was quoted in the Glory of Their Times saying, "Harry Frazee became the owner of the Red Sox in 1917, and before long he sold off all our best players and ruined the team. Sold them all to the Yankees-Ernie Shore, Duffy Lewis, Dutch Leonard, Carl Mays, Babe Ruth. Then Wally Schang and Herb Pennock and Joe Dugan and Sam Jones. I was disgusted. The Yankee dynasty of the twenties was three-quarters the Red Sox a few years before." He also added, "(Frazee) was short on cash and he sold the whole team down the river to keep his dirty nose above water. What a way to end a wonderful ball club!" So there you have it. Another pig. I just thought this story should be brought to life because, not only did the Boston Pilgrims(later called the Sox) win the very first World Series, they also won four World Series over the course of seven years. In 1912 Joe Wood won 34 games, with ten shutouts and winning 16 in a row. This team was destroyed not because the Yankees were so great, but because they were forced to become the enemy by one man, an enemy to all, Harry Frazee
1912 Red Sox
The 1918 Champion Red Sox
In 1921 the Yankees went to their first pennant. Their leading hitter? Babe Ruth, of course. And what about pitching? Well, Carl Mays was the top pitcher. If the Red Sox stars hadn't been sold to the Yankees, perhaps Boston would have the dynasty, who knows? At least they wouldn't have the curse.
From top down: Babe Ruth, Carl Mays, Ernie Shore, Duffy Lewis, Dutch Leonard, Wally Schang, Herb Pennock, Sam Jones and Joe Dugan
