I've never really looked back before today, found the site by accident. I was floored. Great job! The picture of Lacey Pitts brought the memories back, big time. I wonder if he'll EVER learn to play Pinocle??? I was on HRD when it hit the freighter and ended up a reserve trainer. I was the Oil King. Keep up the good work!

(lost my first comments) I was a radio traffic analyst with the AF at Samsun, Turkey 60 - 61. During my tour two DD's came into port and I remember hearing that this was the first time US warships had come into the Black Sea since the end of the War. I re embered one as the Dickson and just identified the other by a photo I have as the Davis DD 937. Although neither of their sites mentions the Black Sea cruise I am sure of the Davis and fairly certain the other was the Dickson. The crews were invited up to our base and they paired off with our guys for a tour and "war stories" (cold war). On Sunday nite we took our guys over to the chow hall (we had a great chow hall) which was featuring the usual Sunday nite coldcuts which we, being used to them, thought t e sailors would find no big deal. They took a look at that big spread and one said he wished they could have that on the ship every day. If you'd like a sample of what Samsun was like at that time I have pics up on American Military In Turkey--- maki.simp enet.com/cgm/askeri/amit_dex.htm -- click home page upper left photographs and other.. then scroll down to Samsun (my name). We have a very close friend Debby Johnson. Have lived in RI lifetime except 4 years AF. Proud of the Navy's role here. My oldest brother was gunner in Helldiver on the Shangri-La WWII. You have a beutiful site here- v ry glad I searched for it. My best to you and all the Tin-Can Sailors out there. Will be E-mailing photos. Dave Matteson

My name is Robert "Tex" Lewis BMSN. Served Nov 1950 - June 1954 my entire Navy career. I was Bow Hook of the Captain's gig for 1 year, then I was boat cocswain for the last 3 years. I also ran the 50 foot motor launch for the liberty party. I enjoyed the entire time especially the meditterean and carribean cruises. Hated the 6 months in the Brooklyn Navy Yard for reconversion. Please include me on your ship's crew registry. Your website is incredible. Thanks and Good Luck to all !

YES,I SERVED ON THE USS Harlan R.Dickson DD708 from 2NOV'62 THROUGH 2Oct'64. We spent most of our time sailing to the Carribbean and the Meditteranian stopping at many ports. Saw the Pyrimids while going through the Suez Canal and the Red Sea. I partic lly remember one stop in Aden along the bottom of the Red sea. Seems several members of the ship got into a scuffle with some of the town folk and we had to leave port quickly!!It has been some time since Iv've been in the Navy and I am looking forward t seeing some of my former shipmates. I was a cook who transferred from the fireroom. Several days in the bilges was enough for me. Thanks for creating such a great web page and wealth of information.

Again..thanks for creating this site and stirring up memories. A former crewmember, William R. Osborn

I spent 27 years in the Navy and was on board 7 or 8 different ships but I enjoyed the H R Dickson most of all. Looking forward to seeing many new faces in Jacksonville. It appears that the period of time that I was on board is missing from the ships hi tory. No mention was made of our tour in New Orleans and those were great days.

I served for 23 years in the U.S. Navy. The Dickson was my only ship. Cdr James L. Harrison was the skipper whom to this day I admire and respect. I came aboard as an RMSN from NCS Morocco, and left as an RM2 heading for RM 'B' school in Bainbridge. Would sure like to hear from any of my old shipmates.

Just writing in this log book to make sure it is working. I have really enjoyed doing these pages and can't wait to do more. I think by the time I am done I will know as much of the History of the Dickson as some of you! Best Wishes to you all, and Enjoy!
