| Extra Credit assignments are not given. Lab group cooperation and contribution counts for 10% of the grade. Disregard for class/lab rules loses some or all of these points. Students are given one dropped test grade per semester. A monthly calender is posted in the classroom window (facing outside to be seen at any time), and online at www.calendar.yahoo.com/dickenschemistry. This shows the work done and assignments given each day. Students must make up any work missed due to excused absence. Prior notice of forthcoming absences is recommended. Work missed due to unexcused absence--including suspension--may not be made up. Make up tests must be completed within the first week after the absence during zero period at 6:40 a.m. Students are responsible for scheduling this with me. LATE WORK IS NOT ACCEPTED, TESTS NOT MADE UP BECOME ZEROES. I strongly urge students to ask questions during class, and I am available by prior request at other times. This year I have no conference period so I cannot give up my lunch hour to meet with students or parents. I am usually at school by 7 a.m. which is often the best time to find me for extra help. I am not always in the classroom, but will answer the door if a student knocks. Cheating in any form is not tolerated in my class. I adhere to the CHS policies on this matter. Please read the separate document on cheating to be sure there are no questions about whether something is cheating, or not. GRAPHING CALCULATORS ARE NOT ALLOWED!!! Programmable, so-called graphing calculators or those with infrared capabilities may not be used. Students must have a scientific calculator to take every test and quiz. I do not trade calculators or lend them. The calculator must have the following keys: +, -, x, /, square root, log/antilog, ln/ex, nth root, yx, 1/x or x to the -1 power, parentheses, exponents (look for a key that says EE, EX or EXP) The textbook used is Chemistry, by Steven S. Zumdahl. BOOKS MUST BE COVERED AT ALL TIMES. The following topics will be covered: FIRST SEMESTER Subject Chapter Time Class Rules/Expectations --- .5 week Introduction to Chemistry 1 .5 week Stoichiometry 3 3 weeks Atoms, Ions, Chemical Formulae 2 2 weeks Gases 5 3 weeks Atomic Structure, Periodicity 7 3 weeks Bonding, Molecular Geometry 8/9 3 weeks Liquids and Solids 10 2 weeks Thermochemistry 6 2 weeks SECOND SEMESTER Subject Chapter Time Reactions in Aqueous Solutions 4 2 weeks Solution Chemistry 11 2 weeks Chemical Reaction Rates 12 2 weeks Reaction Rates and Equilibrium 13 2 weeks Nuclear Chemistry 21 2 weeks Acid-Base Reactions 14 2 weeks Acid-Base Equilibrium 15 2 weeks Thermodynamics 16 2 weeks Electrochemistry 17 2 weeks |
