| LAB SAFETY RULES | ||||||
| I. General rules of laboratory work A. An instructor will be present during the performance of laboratory work B. Follow all instructions carefully as given by the instructor and in the directions C. Perform experiments carefully to ensure the safety of all persons D. Perform ONLY those experiments designated by the instructor E. Appropriate safety equipment, such as aprons and goggles, must be worn during laboratory activities F. Do not wear expensive clothing on laboratory days G. REPORT ANY ACCIDENTS TO THE INSTRUCTOR IMMEDIATELY! H. Safety precautions for a given lab will be discussed prior to the lab; these should be noted in the lab writeup and followed carefully I. Students have been shown the location of the shower and eyewash and appropriate use of these items J. Perform the experiment ONLY with your assigned group members; students should rely on their own information and not refer to other groups' work K. Lab work missed due to excused absence must be made up immediately; data to be gotten from the teacher, the remainder the student's responsibility, including a full page write-up of the mechanics of the lab missed L. Use common sense; no pushing, shoving or other physical play in the laboratory M. No gum or other food will be allowed in the classroom at any time N. Lab safety questions will be asked throughout the year on tests, quizzes and other classroom activities II. Handling laboratory equipment and chemicals A. Be sure all glassware is clean before using B. Never force glass tubing into or out of rubber stoppers; always lubricate with glycerine or soap C. Never point the mouth of a test tube toward any person while heating the test tube; always point the test tube toward a wall while heating D. Conserve all chemicals; don't be wasteful E. Once you have taken a chemical from its container, do not return it to its container--therefore, don't take more than you need (see previous rule) F. Never taste anything in the laboratory G. Never drink out of laboratory glassware H. Never pass your hand--or anything other than appropriate lab equipment--over a lighted Bunsen burner I. Never leave a lighted Bunsen burner unattended J. When lighting a burner, always light the match first, then turn on the gas K. When working with flame, long hair must be tied back; keep a hairband available for lab activities (NOTE: mousse, hairspray and most other hairstyling products are highly flammable--use extra caution if you have these in your hair) L. If you spill any chemical on yourself, first flush the area with water, then report to the instructor BE CAREFUL: there are some chemicals that do more harm if water is added--these will be noted in the pre-lab discussion M. NEVER BRING A FLAME NEAR ALCOHOL N. Never add water to an acid; always add acid to water (SLOWLY) O. Baking soda will be kept in the room for all activities involving acids; it will neutralize any acid used P. Follow all additional safety rules deemed necessary by the instructor |
