Campaign in the Valley
April 2004
Following  General Lee's appearance at the Butler County Civil War Round Table, just North of Pittsburgh, Pa, I rode to Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Va. to hear the keynote speech at the biennial "Stonewall Symposium". Noted history professor and author Bill Bergen from the University of Virginia was to speak on  "Politicial Officers and General Jackson". Professor Bergan's presentation was to be at Lee Chapel on the campus of Washington and Lee University, so I couldn't resist attending! While there I also discovered the hospitality of the staff of the "Stonewall" Jackson House as they invited me to deliver Lee's General Order #9 at the Symposium's luncheon held at Virginia Military Institute.

Appomattox
After my most enjoyable visit to Lexington, I then rode to Appomattox Court House where this "General Lee" did a morning of "living history" at the National Park. This photo was taken in front of the Wilmer McLean house where the surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia took place on April 9, 1865.

During Professor Bergen's speech I sat at the appropiate pew, but it was not in the center and up front. It was at the far left side of the Chapel where a humble man might sit.

Robertson
Following my presentation of "General Order #9" I heard a distinctive voice and turned to see one of my favorite Civil War authors, Dr. James I. Robertson Jr., Alumni Distinguished Professor and Executive Director of the Virginia Center for Civil War Studies at Virginia Tech. and the author of  "Stonewall Jackson, The Man, The Soldier, The Legend".
