Volume 5, No. 5 September-October, 2003 ISSN 1524-2552 Published by: 2003 Richard Cryer Richard Cryer [e-mail: [email protected]] Page 1 Back Issues: $5.00 December 12, 2003 EDITOR?S CORNER During the last five years, this newsletter?s SOURCES column has featured approximately 25 books on the Longenecker genealogy. A few of the most important ones, with comments, are listed in this newsletter (e.g., History of the Longacre-Longaker-Longenecker Family, 1902; Longanecker History, 1937; etc.). Many of these books present incorrect genealogical information concerning the early 18th-century Longeneckers, and critical data are often missing. On a positive note, however, researchers were at least consistent in their inconsistencies! Frequently, the same errors were made over and over. The newsletter?s staff, in the last five years, also have collected references to approximately 100 genealogical books that peripherally mention the Longeneckers. These references are the focus of our current issue. Unlike many of the sources that focus exclusively on the Longeneckers, these more general references are a bit more rigorous in their research, and frequently contribute to (and correct) existing knowledge of the early 18th- century Longeneckers. Information from these relevant sources ? for the moment not yet applied to the Longenecker story ? might resolve some of the key questions concerning the 18th-century Longeneckers. Of course, many genealogical books that mention the Longeneckers are not covered in this newsletter. As such, Readers are invited to suggest other useful references that mention the Longenecker families. One example of ?missing data? is Scott Reynold?s failure to mention Samuel B. Longnecker?s (1857-1929) ancestors in his 128-page book, The History of the Longenecker Family (see p. 7). However, these ancestors are covered in Leah B. Becker?s 136-page book, A Biographical History of the Becker Family (see p. 4). As an aside, Ulrich?s (1664-1752) son-in-law Jacob Huber lived in Lenzweiler, Pfalz-Zweibrcken, in 1748, as mentioned in Vol. 1, No. 3, p. 2. A www search for geneal-ogy trees of ?Jacob Huber? uncovered the oldest family in Switzerland ? that of Hans Huber, born circa 1430. The editor e-mailed Huber?s descendants in Switzerland, Germany, The Netherlands, and in the U.S. We?ll see what turns up. [In Die Mannrechtsrodel von Bern, Wittmer quoted that on ?Apr. 18, 1733, Jacob Huber from ?Keilen? moved to Drachenbronn, Alsace.?] Other families not yet contacted might know Ulrich?s daughter?s name. *************** PROFILES ULRICH LANGENEGGER, CONTINUED An addition to Albert Ulrich Langenegger?s (1889- 1964) ancestors and descendants, as covered in Vol. 5, No. 4, pps. 4 ? 7, follows. Albert Ulrich Langenegger?s great3-grandfather, Johann Konrad (1749-1818) is shown on Fig. 1, p. 2. He is mentioned in the Historical-Biographical Lexicon of Switzerland, Vol. 4, p. 601, Paul Attinger Printing, A.G., Neuenburg, Germany, 1927: ?LANGENEGGER. A family in Canton Appellzell that was named after the village Langenegg; and was often mentioned in documents from the middle of the 15th century onwards. Johann Konrad Langenegger (1749- 1818) from Gais [Canton Appellzell] was an accomplished architect. Following the 1780 fire in Gais, he designed and managed the construction of 19 new houses. After a long sojourn in Petersburg [St. Petersburg, Russia?], he returned to Gais and, in 1802-1810, Konrad directed the building of the important Zellwegger- and Tobler-houses in Trogen [Canton Appellzell]. In 1808, he erected a church in Speicher [Canton Appellzell], and later oversaw the construction of various factory buildings.? Some of Johann Konrad?s descendants moved first from Canton Appellzell, then north to Canton Thurgau, west to Canton Zrich, west to Canton Aargau, west to Canton Solothurn, and finally east to Canton Aargau. Currently, Peter H. lives in Canton Aargau, and owns and operates the Hotel Zofingen. In the late 19th to early 20th centuries, some family members immigrated to the east coast, the western shore of Lake Michigan, and the west coast of the U.S. Albert Ulrich immigrated to Milwaukee in 1924. Before that, in his Lehrstck (apprenticeship exam), he carved a bear out of stone that stands in a St. Gallen?s, Canton St. Gallen (north of Appelzell) fountain. Three of Konrad?s 19 tasteful, 18th-century town-houses - located in Dorfplatz, Gais - are engraved in a 30-centimes stamp (see Fig. 2) commemorating the village of Gais. This newsletter has four First Day Covers, which depicts in the lower left-hand corner a 2?x1? silver drawing of these gabled houses. The stamp was issued on Sep. 12, 1968, and has the Scott?s catalogue number ?Switzerland 444?. Quoting from Scott: ?30 c. Gabled Houses, Gais Violet Fibers, Fluorescent Paper 444 A144 30c. Vermilion (?68)? Jean Langenegger Schultz sent this newsletter a photograph of these townhouses in Gais (see Fig. 3). Gais, first mentioned in 1272 AD, has a very beautiful village central square where the 19 characteristic 18th-century townhouses with arched gables (Schweifgiebel-husen) are located. The houses were designed and constructed by Johann Konrad Langenegger. Gais, current population 2,837, is a well-frequented health resort thanks to its curative air, and was the first spa to offer a ?whey cure? (Webster?s 1913 dictionary definition: ?Treatment with whey as a drink, to treat minor wounds, and in baths?) and ?whey wraps?. Whey was used as far back as ancient Greece, and it probably was Cleo-patra?s beauty secret. The alleged uses of whey are endless - internally, from curing a headache to indigestion; externally, from removing dandruff to treating insect bites. Ulrich?s (1889-1964) cousin Hans (1904-2001), the son of Hans Ulrich Gottwald (1878-1920), was born in Romanshorn, Canton Thurgau; married Lily Heckele in Zrich in 1943; and in the 1960?s was the director of the Hotel Waldhaus Dolder in Zrich, Switzerland. As mentioned on p. 1, Hans? son, Peter H., and his wife, ne Batrice Marguerite Marthe Hugentobler, currently own and operate the Hotel Zofingen, CH-4800 Zofingen, Switzerland (e-mail: [email protected] or www.hotel-zofingen.ch). If you visit Switzerland, be sure to stay in the Hotel Zofingen near Zrich! Peter?s father, Hans, related that ?all of the Swiss Langeneggers originated from Gais, Switzerland. In the 16th century, the Luther reformation led to local wars between the Catholics and Protestants. In the year 1596, the Canton Appenzell was divided into the Catholic Appenzell Inner Rhoden and Protestant Appenzell Ausser (Outer) Rhoden. Technically, Gais is situated in Ausser Rhoden, but lies on the border of Inner Rhoden. Some of the Langeneggers [uncertain about their religious preferences?] stayed in Gais, but the truly-Protestant Langeneggers immigrated to Langnau, Canton Bern, and the truly-Catholic Langeneggers immigrated to Baar, Canton Zug.? These chronicles are noteworthy and, if true, might help resolve some of the questions concerning the Long-eneckers in the early 18th century. More research has to be undertaken. SOURCES BOOKS, THE LONGENECKER FAMILY A major part of the 109 books that follow are non-Longenecker authors that peripherally mention the genealogy of the Longeneckers. Not included are thousands of reference books and documents that mention the Longeneckers, such as the biographical annals of various counties and states, church histories and studies, encyclopedias, immigrant lists, sampler and Fraktur publications, manuscripts of historical associations, genealogies on the www and in the Church of the Later-Day Saints? library, etc. These books offer insight into those individuals - mostly women - who married outside of the Longenecker family. It is hoped that readers will submit other books that might resolve some of the key questions concerning the 18th-century Longeneckers.
