Comment page for the Declaration of faith (Vatican, August 6' 2000)

This is a very troubling pronouncement. On the surface, I tend to agree, even though I am Protestant. Scripture is quite clear that even though there were many communities of faith that followed "the way," they all recognized the church at Jerusalem, then headed by James, as the mother church. I have always questioned the power/right of Martin Luther to withdraw from the church and launch the Protestant movement. I am troubled because I continue to give more credibility to what the Pope declares than to my own denomination leaders and other Protestant leaders. I shall give the matter reflection and prayer.
