Migrant Expo to help migrants settle in NZ

In the past, new settlers and even long established migrants had to depend on the grapevine to access information about their basic concerns of settling in New Zealand.

Often this was a hit-or-miss process. You may be given incorrect or incomplete information and as a result miss out on some basic entitlements or a competitive edge in the employment market. What is worse is to hear about something that could have helped you in settling very much further down the track. This can set you back.

Migrant News, the only migrant newspaper for new settlers is organizing a major expo during the Labour Weekend, 23-24 October to help migrants overcome this information gap. The Expo is sponsored by the Migrant Banking Division of ASB Bank.

It will be held at the Alexandra Park Convention Centre along Greenlane West Road, Greenlane. Entry to the show is free of charge. There is paid parking on site or free parking in the neighbourhood.

Under one roof, migrants will be able to access information on a host of settlement matters: registering as a voter in New Zealand, opening a bank account, buying a house, leading edge educational, training and settlement courses (some which are free of charge). Information on your immigration concerns (including job offers), employment and careers.

And last but not least, a line of Government organizations, resource centres and community groups with lots of information on hand.

According to the organizers, this will be time well spent for visitors, as they can expect to fast-track their settlement process by accessing a wealth of information for the family.

To make the visit really worthwhile, recent migrants can pick up a free copy of the Migrant Handbook 2004 exclusively at the Expo (some conditions apply and while stocks last).

There are some lucky draw prizes for visitors, including an air ticket (terms and conditions apply for use of the ticket). Results of the draw will be announced in the November edition of Migrant News.

An employment conference for job seekers will be held concurrently at the same venue. Registered job seekers can attend the conference free of charge, there is a nominal fee for others.
