Kiwi-Ora holds student open day

Kiwi-Ora, a free distance learning educational programme designed to assist immigrants settle into their new life in New Zealand held its first Student Open Day last August 29 at the Logan Campbell Centre. This was an opportunity for all migrants to get together and celebrate their new lives in the country and at the same time thank all those that have supported the programme since its inception.

The programme provides immigrants with practical and very informative resources, which include videotapes, CDs, maps, books and dictionaries. The resources cover a wide range of issues including transport, health, education, employment, history, legal system and the Treaty of Waitangi. It caters for approximately 11,000 immigrants and refugees around the country per annum.

Other highlights of the day include: distinguished guest speakers, inspiring new audio visual presentations, meeting Kiwi Ora staff and Programme Advisors, professional entertainment and networking opportunities.

Other NZ government agencies and private businesses were also on hand to show what they can offer to the community. Like the: Tertiary Education Commission - where you can gather info on the English for Migrants programme; The Citizens Advice Bureau - where you can gather info on how the CAB can help you; NZ Police Recruitment Division - where you can find out more about employment opportunities in the police force; TelstraClear Internet Services - where you can find out more about getting connected to the internet; ASB Bank - where you can find out more about managing your financial affairs; Registrar of Electors - where you can gather information about voter registration; and the Ethnic Affairs - where a language line will be explained to you about the government initiative to assist you in terms of language barriers.
