When you think about hurricane Katrina most of you tend to think about New Orleans.  I think what too many people don't realize is that the devastation was far worse in parts of Alabama and Mississippi.  Yet those areas got only a fraction of the news coverage.  We see the images on the news of the re-opening of the French quarter and its's easy to assume that things are much better now. Unfortunately, there are many, many people who are still living like refugees in our own country, and they fear America has forgotten about them.  Katrina's damage was so massive due to the fact  when it came ashore it just sat there for 8 hours and then took 4 hours to cross for a total of 12 hours of pounding Gulfport. Perhaps we can all make an effort to remember one of the worst disasters in our nation's history and do something to help in the ardous task of rebuilding.
Since I am from Gulfport, MS. I am posting pictures of Gulfport, but the ENTIRE Mississippiu gulf coast looked pretty much the same. It has taken ages just to
clean the mess up.  With all the battles with insurance not paying and  FEMA woes, rebuilding is slow, very slow.  It's far from over, and for many people things are far from fine.
I know that not everyone has the money for donations, but it doesn't cost anything to write your congressmen and ask that they support giving the south  additional aid.
I personally was VERY  lucky, my home received minimal damage and was quickly fixed,  but I want to say a very heartfelt thank you to ALL the faithbased groups and ordinary people doing extraordinary thing to help those in need.
