White Tank Mts, March 2003

White Tank Mts

Our friend from Lincoln, John Zimmer was down here for a few days. While he was here we took a trip up to the White Tank Mountains. They get their name from the "tank" worn in the rocks at the base of a water fall that appears after heavy rains. The tank was a watering spot for the native people for many years. We got there a couple days after a heavy rain so there was still some water coming over the falls.

The path to the falls starts out pretty easy. It's nice and smooth and flat.

After about the first half mile however, things start getting a little difficult. Pretty soon it seemed to be made for mountain goats only. In addition it was not very clearly marked and we got lost on several occassions.

Eventually the trail ends in a small box canyon. On the right side of the canyon is the falls. When the tank is full the overflow creates a small lake in the base of the canyon.

There had been some rain in the area a couple days before we got there so there was still some water coming over the falls. This is a relatively rare sight. The tank however, because it is so deep, has water in it most of the year.
