Kartchner Caverns, July 2003

kcaves

Kartchner Caverns has only been open a few years. They are located a few miles south of Benson AZ. They are still growing so the Parks Dept. is very careful about how they allow visitors to tour the cave. You can only go through them with a supervised tour group and there is often a waiting list of a few days to several months depending on the time of year. No pictures are allowed in the cave, so all the pictures here were taken in the welcome center.

The formations are beautiful. They have the longest "soda straw" in the US and second longest in the world.

CJ had to try squeezing through the kind of openings that the original discovers had to use.

The park Ranger who lead our tour did a wonderful job. She had helped put in the origanal trails and told us some interesting stories about the development of the caverns.
