What is “Consciousness”, that ability to be aware of ourselves and the world around us? Some people call it a “Soul” when referring to humans, but this ability is also present in many other living things. It has never been found in an autopsy, and it seems to disappear when we die. Thus it cannot be some form of matter that exists within us. If it were we should be able to see it, and it would continue to exist (even if not functioning) after death. But we can’t find it and we have no real evidence of its existence after death (theology, religion, and faith aside.)
We are pretty sure it is some function of the brain. If it is a function as opposed to a part or a place in the brain, then it must be energy reacting with the matter of our brain that gives us this illusion of “consciousness.” We know of the existence of only two things, energy and matter. If something isn’t one then it must be the other. Consciousness must be the result of energy as it interacts with the matter of our brains.
I believe that energy and matter exist in different dimensions and interact with each other at a frequency of 10 to the -43 times every second (see Mensa Bulletin, Jan. ’04). But I suspect that the dimension of energy does not interact with every atom or piece of matter in our space, matter, and motion dimension with that same frequency. The frequency of 10 to the -43 is probably the maximum frequency with which any piece of the space, matter, and motion dimension can interact with the dimension of energy, but any individual piece (i.e., group of atoms, molecules, or space) in the space, matter, and motion dimension might interact at a lesser frequency depending on the make-up of that piece.
I believe that every living thing in our space, matter, and motion dimension has some degree of awareness of itself and that this awareness is the result of that organism’s frequency of interaction with the dimension of energy. I believe that every living thing has its own FOA (Frequency Of Awareness), and that this FOA affects how each living thing perceives the world around it.
I love to watch hummingbirds. They seem to live in a world of their own. While they hover they can be looking ahead one instant and then off to the side the next, and you never see their head turn. Could it be that they have a much higher FOA than we do? Could they be turning their heads during those instants in which our brains are not affected by the dimension of energy, but theirs is? Could this also explain why Motion pictures and TV look to us as continuous motion rather than the individual pictures they really are?
If every living thing has its own FOA, then I suspect it is related to its metabolism; the higher its metabolism the greater its FOA. A tree, for example, would have a very low FOA compared to a human. If a human were to cut off one of a tree’s branches, to the tree it would seem that it was there one instant and gone the next. How or why the branch disappeared, or where it went would be a mystery to the tree (if it even cared.)
Sleep and drugs can affect FOA. Things like amphetamines would speed it up, while sleep and sedatives would slow it down. To a person having an operation in which a limb is removed, it would seem to that person that the limb was there right before the operation, but gone when they awoke. Unlike the tree however, and probably because of a higher degree of intelligence, that person would be concerned about the limb’s disappearance.
If the brain then is like an antenna that reacts to the dimension of energy on some regular frequency as that energy interacts with our space, matter, and motion dimension, what happens when the antenna stops functioning (i.e., the brain dies.) The dimension of energy would still exist, but what happens to our individual consciousness, our soul? Does it cease to exist without its antenna? The energy that created it would still exist, but, I believe that all energy is a single unit of something; it doesn’t have parts and pieces. Therefore, there could not be individual “souls” in the dimension of energy. If all energy is a single unit of something that totally imbibes the dimension in which it exists (see Mensa Bulletin article, Jan. ‘04), then Energy is all one piece.
When that “antenna” which creates our consciousness ceases to exist so must our individuality. Our individuality can only exist in the dimension of space, matter and motion. Consciousness is the result of the dimension of energy interacting with the matter of our brain. When that interaction ceases, so must our illusion of individuality. At death our individuality must “melt” into, and become, one again with the Whole of the dimension of energy.
Many of the mysteries of theology and mysticism can now be better understood. For example:Why can’t we communicate with dead individuals? Because they no longer exist as individuals, they are once again a part of the Whole. The question then becomes “Can we communicate with The Whole? I believe we do that regularly through our FOA.
Is there reincarnation? All life in a sense is reincarnated. It all originates from that same single unite of something we call energy.
Man has always wondered, “What is the purpose of life?” I think it is to give to the Whole some reason for being. It creates us, our individuality, from Itself so that we in turn may give It a reason for being. For It to exist alone in the universe would be pointless, not to mention quite boring.
The next question then becomes “What should we do with our individuality while we have it?” The answer to that seems clear to me. If we are all, in fact, a part of the Whole should we not help each other enjoy our individuality while we have it? To hurt another is to hurt the Whole. To hurt the Whole is to hurt ourself. It just makes sense to “do unto others as you would have others do unto you”, for the sake of The Whole.
What we know as the “Golden Rule” is a primary tenet of every major religion in the history of man. I think I know why.
And the end of an individual consciousness should not be a sad thing. It is simply a return to the Whole, which is also a return to the awareness of all consciousness.
As they say in “Star Wars” (paraphrased) – May the Whole Force be with you.
