Poems Collected by Lee Bennett Hopkins. Hand in hand: an American history through poetry. Simon & Schuster: New York. 1994.
Introduction:  In January, sometime around Martin Luther King Day, begin a unit on African American's and their qwest for equality.  Begin with a discussion of famous African American's.  Ask students to name a few African American's who they believe are famous and chart these names.  Go on to discuss equality and what it means in America.  Ask for student input. Show a picture of Martin Luther King and talk about his life.  Ask students what his greatest accomplishments were.  Then read the following poem.

Martin Luther King
by Aileen Fisher

Because he took a stand for peace
and dreamed that he would find
a way to spread equality
to all of humankind.

Because he hated violence
and fought with words, not guns,
he won a timely victory
as one of freedom's sons;

Because he died for liberty,
the bells of history ring
to honor the accomplishments
of Martin Luther King
Extension:  Watch a short video on the life of Martin Luther King. Read the poem again.
