Iguana By Tony Johnston Hopkins, Lee Bennett. A pet for me poems. HarperCollins: New York. 2003.
Introduction: Play the song On Top of Old Smokey. Have the students sing along a second time. Pass out copies of Iguana to the students and have them read the poem as you read it out loud. Sing the poem again using the tune of On Top of Old Smokey. Have the student sing the poem using the same tune.
Iguana By Tony Johnston
I have a small iguana the color of a lime. He eats bugs for supper. (He eats bugs any time.)
He blinks at me, so friendly. He sleeps upon my knee, I love my small iguana. I think that he loves me.
Extension: Have the students try other song tunes that they are familiar with this poem and others. |
