Darling, Kathy. Kangaroos on location. Lothrop, Lee & Shepard Books : New York. 1993.
Katz, Bobbi. Eric Carle's animals animals. Philomel Books: New York. 1989.
Introduction:  Discuss kangaroos- Ask students what type of animal the kangaroo is, where do most of them live, what feature does the kangaroo have which makes it stand out from other animals?
Introduce the non-fiction book of kangeroo's entitled "Kangaroos on Location" by Kathy Darling with photographs by Tara Darling.  Read parts of the book to the students filling them in on information about kangaroos such as how they got their name , how many types of kangaroos there are, where most of the kangaroos live, what they eat, how they care for their young etc.  Show students the photographs in the book as you care.  Next, read this poem on kangaroos.

Travel Plans
by Bobbi Katz

If I could go anywhere,
     Here's what I'd do.
I'd pop in the pouch of a kind
     kangaroo.
I'd travel around for as long
     as I pleased,
And learn to say "thank you"
     in Kangarooses.

Extension:  Have students draw or paint pictures of kangaroo's and have them write a story about the kangaroo they drew.  Have them create a name for their kangaroo and talk about where he lives.  Also have them write where they would have the kangaroo take them if they could have a ride in his pouch.  Let them share their creations.
