Introductions: Have a discussion with students about their families, their pets, and other things they cherish most. Explain that Native American's cherish the entire earth- the mountains, the waters, the plants etc. Read the following poem.
I Sing For the Animals by Teton Sioux Indians in North America
Out of the earth I sing for them, A horse nation I sing for them. Out of the earth I sing for them, The animals I sing for them.
Extension: Discuss the poem. Ask the student what the author is saying. Read the poem again. Pass out copies of the poems format which has only the written lines "I sing for them". Have the students fill in the remaining lines with words of things and or people they would sing of ,had they created this poem. |
