Poetry by Children
Sweeney, Jacqueline. Poems bout school: by America's children. Benchmark Books: New York. 2003.
Introduction:  Share "The Poems About School" poetry book with your students.  Explain that all of the poems and illustrations were done by children in America.  Read this poem from the book.

My happiest time was
by Benjamin Nagasing, Grade 3

when I scored
my first goal in roller hockey and my
coach gave me a pink puck.
Pink like a wonderful face.

Extension:  Have students talk about their "happiest time".  Next have them create a poem about this happiest time complete with illustrations.  Create a class book using the poems and illustrations they created. Bind the book for them and give a copy to the school library for the whole school to enjoy.
