* Born April 13, 1938 in Scranton, Pennsylvania

* Experienced Economic Hardships as a child and young adult.

* Attended Newark State Teachers College receiving his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1960.

* First teaching job was teaching 6th grade in Fair Lawn, New Jersey - 1960

* Curriculum Editor Specialist for Scholastic, Inc.-1968-1976: During this time Hopkins wrote more than two dozen children�s books.

* Became a full-time writer and anthologist in 1976- Has written numerous children�s books and professional texts since then.

* Writes �Poetry Plus�, a column for �Creative Classroom�.

* Host for �Zebra Wings� Television Program(1973-1976)

* Has served on the Board of Directors of the National Council of Teachers of English.

* Donor of the Lee Bennett Hopkins Poetry Award presented by Penn State University and the Lee Bennett Hopkins International Reading Association Promising Poet Award.

* Has received the following awards and honors: 
             * University of Southern Mississippi Medallion for �lasting                    contributions" towards children's literature.   
             * Keystone State Author of the Year Award.
             * American Library Association Notable Book Award- 4 time                   winner..
            * Christopher Award
            * Golden Kite Honor Award

* Currently lives in Westchester County and Greenwich Village, New York.
