Asian American Poetry
Wong, Janet. Good luck gold and other poems. McElerry: New York.  1994
Introduction:  Bring your favorite "good luck charm" to school and talk about it with your students.  Ask how many of them have good luck charms?  Talk about the Chinese culture and the importance of luck in their culture.  Read the following poem.

Good Luck Gold
by Janet Wong

When I was a baby
one month old,
my grandparents gave me
good luck gold:
so soft it bends,
a golden necklace
hooked at the ends,
a golden bracelet
with coins that say
I will be rich
and happy someday.

I wish that gold
would work
real soon.
I need my luck
this afternoon.

Extension:  Discuss the poem and the good luck gold presented by the poets grandparents.  Ask the students if they think good luck charms work in their lives?  Have them close their eyes and think about one thing they have been lucky in (or one positive thing which has happened to them recently or during anytime in their lives.)  Have them paint a picture of this time to share with other classmates.
