 These families include THOMAS, MERCHANT, WILLIAMS, MCCREARY, FRASER, CARVER, RICHARDSON, and TOWNSEND.
 
  • The THOMAS family is traced back to Rowland THOMAS who was born between 1804-1808 in Georgia. Rowland lived for many years in Camden County, Georgia and raised a family there is the first half of the 1800's. The family migrated to Alachua County, Florida where most descendants have lived for many years.
  • The MERCHANT family is traced back to William MERCHANT in Edgefield County, South Carolina in 1740 and his son Silas Merchant born in 1787 in Newberry County, South Carolina. The majority of my MERCHANT family were born and died in Newberry County, South Carolina. Some descendants of Silas - his son David H and grandson George Stuart MERCHANT migrated to Alachua County, Florida in the early 1800's and are buried there.
  • It is believed this WILLIAMS family descended from old and honored that came from Wales settling in North Carolina. The WILLIAMS family is traced back to John Edwards Williams living in Williamsport, Maury County, Tennessee. Most of the information I have found is on John Edward's son John James WILILIAMS was born in 1829 in Maury County, Tennessee. John James lived most of his life in Winchester, Franklin County, Tennessee. Many descendants lived and died in Franklin County, and are still there today. John James WILLIAMS was a gallant soldier and Officer of the Confederacy. He was a leading lawyer, judge, and politician in Winchester - Franklin County, Tennessee. He was elected to the Tennessee State Legislature in 1877 and 1887. He was a highly esteemed and a most prominent man of his day. He contributed to a marked degree to the development of Franklin County, Tennessee.
  • The William Thomas MCCREARY family came from Southport, North Carolina to Alachua County, Florida in the 1860's. They settled first near Cedar Key, Florida, eventually moving to Gainesville - Alachua County, Florida. Most information is concerning William Thomas's son Henry Hamilton MCCREARY born in 1861 in Southport, North Carolina. He grew up and raised his family in Alachua County. Henry H MCCREARY was a journalist, and editor and owner of early Gainesville, Florida newspapers the Alachua Advocate Gainesville Daily News which became the Gainesville Sun. He was also a Florida State Seneator.
  • The FRASER family is traced back to the early 1700's in Scotland. Many descendants migrated to Sumter County, South Carolina where they lived for generations. A Few descendants then migrated to Alachua County, Florida where they lived and died.
  • The CARVER family is traced back to James Carver born in Yorkshire, England in 1527. In the 1600's the FRASER family migrated to Chowan County, North Carolina. Descendants settled in Edgecomb and Cumberland County, North Carolina. In the early and mid 1800's some descendants migrated to Ware, and Clinch, and Coffee County, Georgia.
  • The RICHARDSON family came from Virginia. I have this family line traced back to 1756 with William Richardson. William's son John was born in Lancaster, South Carolina and raised a family there. John's son James Madison RICHARDSON was born in 1809 migrated to Corinth MS then to Alachua County - Gainesville, Florida in 1854. Many descendants of James Madison RICHARDSON lived and died in Alachua County. James Madison RICHARDSON and sons made a big impact on settlement and development of Alachua County, Florida. James Madison's son James Madison Jr. was a Louisiana State Senator.
  • This TOWNSEND family is traced back to the early 1600's in England. After arriving from England they settled in Marlboro County, South Carolina. Many family members then migrated to Lowndes County, Georgia finally settling in Gilchrist and Alachua County, Florida.
