June 2002
Dear Parents,
Studies show that students lose a high percentage of learned material over the summer months without continued practice and reinforcement. This is most definitely the case with first graders! Please don't let this happen to your child! Continue short but steady reinforcement in reading and math throughout the summer. Just 15 to 20 minutes daily can reap great benefits and help prepare him/her for the challenges of second grade. The attached worksheets are intended for this purpose. I hope you will put them to good use.
I would also like to stress the importance of reading to your child often throughout the summer. Children of all ages enjoy listening to a good story. It is a wonderful, memorable way to keep your child excited about reading!
Finally, I am available for individual tutoring this summer. Feel free to contact me (through the office or via eMail) if you feel your child would benefit.
I am very proud of the progress your child has made this past year, as I know you are. Please continue to support his/her learning over the summer months.
