Wow! Five Whole Days of Learning!

Dear Parents,

At last . . . our first full week of school! What a big adjustment! Please make sure your child gets plenty of sleep. We need lots of energy to learn and to get through the day.

Our Sticker Reading is off to a great start. Several children have completed the Utility Word Book and are ready to begin our Short Vowel Word Book. The Short Vowel book will help us learn how to blend sounds together to form words. I am also in the process of determining each child's reading level. Soon the children will begin reading books at their appropriate level.

Mrs. Taptich and I have scheduled our first field trip for the year. On October 2nd, we will visit Upland Hills Farm. Please make sure you send in your child's permission slip by Friday, Sept. 12. Checks should be made payable to "cash" as this is a class function.

Attached is our homework for the week. Would you believe, many of the children said they liked doing homework? For first graders, I recommend that you spend no more than 20 minutes a night doing homework. Homework includes any worksheets and/or assigned projects, studying spelling words and practicing the wordbooks. The children have all week to complete worksheets/projects, as they are not due until Friday.

Parents, please come to me with any problems or concerns you may have. I can only address problems when I am made aware of them. Please know that I will do everything within my power to correct the situation.

Have a great week! Ms. Kopilchack

Now, for a look at this week's activities:

Language Arts
Our story for this week is called Five Little Ducks. The skills we'll learn while reading this story include sequence of events and plurals.

Our Word Wall is beginning to grow now. Soon we'll be doing Word Wall activities that will help us learn our site words. Before long we'll be using the wall to help us with our writing activities.

We write in our Journals 2-3 times per week. The children are encouraged to use inventive spelling for words they do not know. Our initial focus is to practice directional print and to put spaces between our words.

Phonics
We continue reviewing initial consonant letters / sounds. Please check your child's folder for a list of letters/sounds your child needs to work on.

Math
We continue our review of numbers 1 20. Math concepts are reinforced with hands-on activities at our Math Center.

Science
This week we'll take a look at how animals move and animal coverings. If anyone has a snakeskin, turtle shell, pelt of fur, etc., please share them with us.

Religion
The children are learning about God's special gifts and caring for God's wonderful world.

Homework Study spelling words, practice wordbooks, attached "Begins with___" activity.
