We Love To Read!

Dear Parents,

In celebration of reading month we've been enjoying Dr. Seuss books and activities. We wrote our own silly rhyming words and drew our own Seuss-like characters. This week we'll write about why we like Dr. Seuss. In fact, our next class book will be titled, "We Love Dr. Seuss!

Parents, I hope that you are encouraging your child to read at home and are filling out the reading log that was sent home last week. Once the log is complete, just send it in and I'll provide your child with another one. Remember, our class goal is to read 7500 minutes this month.

I'm still looking for volunteers to come in and read to the children. Come on parents, especially you dads! I promise I'll do my best to accommodate your schedule.

For homework, I'm asking that the children make a simple leprechaun trap. (I hear we may have a visit from one and we want to catch him!) Ideas for a trap might include an old shoebox, paper towel tubes, some sort of netting, etc. The traps are due next Tuesday.

We are currently learning about Baptism. Please send to school with your child, his/her Christian name and the names of his/her godparents

Have a great week!

Ms. Kopilchack

This week's activities:

Our story this week is You'll Soon Grow Into Them, Titch. We will learn about story elements to include plot: the problem and solution.

Our writing activities will be in the spirit of Dr. Seuss. We'll also write about how to catch a leprechaun!

Phonics/Word Wall Activities
We continue to learn the long O sound and spelling patterns.
We add five new words to our Word Wall this week.

We wrap up number patterns and place value this week and will begin our Money unit. Please send to school in a ziplock bag 4 quarters, 10 dimes, 5 nickels and 20 pennies for our hands-on activities.

Science
This week we'll learn about the Food Pyramid and eating healthy foods.

Religion
We are learning about Baptism and will participate in a mock Baptism with Mrs. Brown, Director of Religious Ed. We are also learning about Lent. For first-graders, it means learning how we can become more like Jesus
