Six More Weeks of Winter?

Dear Parents,

Having just completed our unit on light and shadows, we're ready to make our own predictions about the continuance of winter and/or an early spring. Of course, it won't hurt to compare our predictions with Mr. Groundhog's--since he's the expert on such things!

The month of February is again a busy month for us. We spend some time learning about presidents of the United States and there's also Valentine's Day to look forward to.
Attached is a special assignment for your child to complete by Thursday, February 12th. Your child chose a president to write a report about. In addition to the library, you may want to check out the "Presidents" links on our class web page. They can be found on the "Just4 Kids" page. Our website address is:

Also attached is a Valentine's project along with a list of your child's classmates. This project is also due by February 12th. I'm sending both assignments home now to give you and your child ample time to work on them.

Do you have any old magazines lying around? Magazines like Good Housekeeping, Woman's Day, Bon Appetite, etc. (magazines that have pictures of food) would be great! We will use them for our upcoming Health Unit.

Thanks and have a great week!

This week's activities:

Reading/Writing
Our story this week is Seven Sillies. This story teaches us about story sequence. The vocabulary in this story is quite difficult, so we'll be spending a considerable amount of time working with words.

We have been very busy writing and publishing class books. So far, we've published six! This week our topic is "If I Were the President" which will also be made into a class book.

Phonics/Word Wall Activities
We are currently learning the long vowel "I" sound and spelling patterns. We are also focusing on beginning blends.

Math
We begin place value and number patterns this week.
Please continue to practice math facts at home. Your child should be beginning to learn some facts "by heart." This can only happen with consistent practice.

Science
We'll take a quick look at heat and how things stay warm. This ties in nicely with our Polar Animals unit. Then, we move on to how things move, simple machines and magnets.

After winter break, we'll begin our unit on Health.

Religion
This week Jesus teaches us to pray. We'll learn the "Our Father" and write our own prayers.
