The Holidays Are Fast Approaching!

Dear Parents,

The holidays are fast approaching. Can you believe it's almost Thanksgiving? We are learning about the First Thanksgiving and thinking about all the things we are thankful for. As the Advent season approaches, we'll be doing many activities to help us prepare for the coming of Jesus. Before you know it, it will be Christmas! No doubt about it, it's a busy time of year.

With the holiday spirit upon us, OLR is currently accepting donations for the Lighthouse Thanksgiving Food Drive. First graders are asked to donate piecrust this year. Your donations will be greatly appreciated.

Now that the cold weather is here, please be sure to dress your child appropriately. The girls should bring a pair of pants to school to help keep them warm at recess.

Some things to look forward to . . .

December 2nd - Santa's Secret Shop
December 5th - The Wizard of Oz

Have a great week!

Now, for a look at this week's activities:

Reading/Writing
We've completed the second level of our reading series and will be doing lots of review this week. We will also take our Level 2 test. I'm sending home a list of spelling

and sight words your child should know. I'm also sending home the Level 2 books we've read. Please spend some time listening to your child read them to you.

We started Writer's Workshop last Friday and published our first class book titled, Love is . . . This week we'll be writing about How to Cook a Turkey (just in case you need a recipe).

Phonics/Word Wall Activities
We wrap up the short vowel I this week and will spend some time reviewing both short A and I.

Ask your child about Be A Mind Reader, a fun Word Wall activity to help us practice our sight words.

Math
We continue with subtraction this week. We'll learn about using subtraction to compare numbers, subtraction story problems and subtracting zero/sub-tracting all.

Science
Last week we learned how to classify objects and did a "sink or float" experiment by making predictions and testing them. This week we'll explore states of matter (solids, liquids, and gases) and do lots of hands-on learning.

Religion
We continue to learn about Mary, the Mother of Jesus. We'll learn the Hail Mary and about how we honor Her.

Homework
Read Level 2 books, review spelling/sight words, attached activities.
