Issue No. 1                                                               August 25, 2003

Dear Parents,

Well, we made it through the first few days of 1st grade! We are slowly learning our classroom routines and getting down to the business of learning. The children are doing a great job!

Last week we did some "getting to know you" activities and toured our school. We learned our 1st Grade Pledge and our Class Promise to "Be An Angel." We also began a review of consonant letter sounds.

This week we begin our Language Arts Instruction which includes Guided Reading, Spelling, Phonics and Working With Words. We will also begin Math, Religion and Handwriting practice this week.

Next week we are introduced to Learning Centers. The centers are designed to provide hands-on activities that reinforce our learning. Before long we'll be adding Writing and Science to our schedule.

If you have not already done so, please send in the$8.50 to cover class fees and our Weekly Reader costs. I'd also like the Volunteer Forms as soon as possible. I like getting parents involved early on, especially with "Sticker" Reading.

I look forward to meeting all of you at Parent Orientation on Wednesday, August 27, at 7:00 p.m. I'll be sharing important information about our class and answering any questions you may have.

Once again, thank you for your active involvement in your child's education. Together we can help them reach their fullest potential.

This week's activities:

Language Arts
We begin our reading series with a story called, I Went Walking.
From our story, we are introduced to high-frequency words (or sight words), which will be used for Word Wall activities, vocabulary words (words used frequently in the story) and our spelling words. We will have our first spelling test (the spelling words only) this Thursday. In Phonics we will review beginning sounds and rhyming words.

Math
We begin with a review of numbers 1 - 20. We will practice counting and number order.

Handwriting
We begin our handwriting instruction this week. We teach manuscript style writing here at OLR. Attached is a sample sheet to help you help your child practice his/her handwriting skills at home.

Religion
We begin our religious instruction learning prayers and making a prayer book. We go on to learn about the many gifts that God gives us.

Homework (Already?)
Study spelling words (don't forget to write them), handwriting/name writing practice, begin Utility Wordbooks.
