"Dinomite" Dinosaurs

 A Lesson for Grade 2 Students

Lesson Objective:

Students will research a particular dinosaur and using Kid Pix 3 Deluxe software, produce a 5 - 6 page slideshow about their dinosaur. Students will be graded based on the criteria outlined in a teacher-created rubric.

Technology Standards 1 & 2

Standard 1

All students will use technologies to input, retrieve, organize, manipulate, evaluate, and communicate information.

Standard 2

All students will apply appropriate technologies to critical thinking, creative expression, and decision-making skills.

 Procedures:
  1.  Introduce Lesson - Tell students that they will use the Internet to research a dinosaur and will create a Kid Pix slideshow about the dinosaur.
  2. Distribute copies of the Dinosaur Information Worksheet and the Slideshow Requirements sheet. Review with the students and answer any questions.
  3. Have students log onto the Internet and find the Project Sites folder in the Favorites Menu. Have them go to the Dinosaur WebQuest site, scroll down to find the list of dinosaurs and select one.
  4. After selecting a dinosaur to research, have them print a copy of the Dinosaur Fact Sheet.
  5. Explain that they may use the sites in the Project folder to find information and pictures for their slideshow.
  6. Explain that they will be creating one slide at a time and that the teacher will be walking them through putting the slideshow together
    Note: My students are very experienced using Kid Pix Deluxe, but will need help inserting graphics and creating the slideshow itself.
  7. Mini-Lesson: Using NetOp demonstration software, the teacher will:
    • show students how to copy graphics into a folder
    • review Kid Pix basics
  8. Students begin research.
  9. Mini Lesson: The teacher begins by showing a sample slideshow followed by more Kid Pix tips to include how to insert a graphic.
  10. Students continue with research and begin creating slides.
  11. Students complete research and individual slides.
  12. Teacher demonstrates how to create a slideshow then proceeds with step-by-step instructions.
  13. Wrap up - Using demonstration software, students present their final projects to the class.
