Stonehenge & Avebury
August 2, 2003
The day after my birthday, Kat, Em and I crawled painfully out of bed (after 3 hours sleep), fixed our hangovers with a huge breakfast of bacon and eggs and bravely got in the car to tackle the traffic on the way to Stonehenge.  Some 6 traffic jams later, and way too much time spent in the car, we actually got there... and it is worth paying to get into even though you can't get within 20 metres of the stones!  You get an audio tour as you walk around which is actually quite interesting and will explain the funny black things that we are holding to out ears in some of the piccies.
As you can see, it was an absolutely stunning day - warm, sunny, bright and brilliant!  The piccie on the left kinda speaks for itself. (And thanks to the man who gave us tips on taking pictures into the sun etc!)  While at Stonehenge, we met up (sort of planned) with some other Aussie chicks - all OT friends of Em's so that was pretty cool - an Aussie reunion at Stonehenge!  We had a bit of a kip on the grass and headed off in search of less touristy stones in Avebury.

The Ring of Stones - Avebury

Avebury dusk
Me and Kat outside the gorgeous thatched roof pub where we had our great steak and ale pies!
We found our way down gorgeous country lanes, spooky sections of road where it was pitch black because of the dense woods, and little quaint villages to the car park that was apparently our destination - Avebury.  This place was full of weird people and their growling dogs - must be the original pagans come to see the unspoilt feeling of the Ring of Avebury
This was great to see as you could walk amongst the stones and chase the sheep (Emily!...) so long as you dodged all the droppings!  The Ring of Avebury has been around about as long as Stonehenge and is right on the edge of a beautiful little village (Avebury!!)  So we ran around in the fresh free air for a bit and headed to the pub to settle our growling stomachs
We crawled into the pub just before the food counter closed, dodged the bikies and the fighting dogs and the weird people and settled into a comfy big armchair (aka big brother chair), ordered a hearty english meal (steak and ale pie), before making the long journey home.  Got back just before 1am and totally collapsed into bed... hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
