| The adoption process in Australia differs slightly from state to state as it is controlled by state government departments in each state. On this website I will summarise the process that applies in the state of Victoria. |
| Phone or write to the Department of Human Services, Intercountry Adoption Service (ICAS) enquiring about intercountry adoption. ICAS sends out an information kit. Booking made for Intercountry Adoption Information Evening. Both members of the couple attend the information evening. Couple sends in a Registration of Interest form to adopt. ICAS offers an application to those who have registered interest as new applicants are needed. Couples offered applications have three weeks to respond to the offer. Applications are submitted including names of four references, individual medicals, police checks and the family information form. Applicants are offered a place in education groups. Infertility treatment to be completed by the start of the education groups. Both members of the couple attend the three full days of education groups. Applicants then must prepare and submit their lifestories, genograms, country projects for the two countries they are considering adopting from, a financial statement and a child characteristics form. A social worker is assigned to applicants to complete their homestudy Upon submission of the homestudy and the applicant's response to it the ICAS manager to make a determination whether the couple are approved to adopt. Applicants prepare and submit documentation required for the overseas country they have selected. |
