Dear ladies and gentlemen, This is a humanitarian appeal which I forward to your attention. My name is Elena-Loredana Mandachi, I am 26 years old, of which 25 have been deeply marked by suffering. I was born in Falticeni, a town in the north of Romania. My friends call me Diana. At the age of 1, because of being administrated a wrong injection, I got my right leg infected and paralyzed. Ever since I have spent my life in hospitals and sanatoriums. I have been taken care of by tens of physicians and nurses, who took the place of my mother and father. Since early childhood, being quite aware of my being disabled, I tried hard to fight to improve my health status. It was also in hospitals and sanatoriums where I attended school. Besides of the fact that I was not able to walk because of my illness, I also broke my arms and my left leg and later it was discovered that I got a bone malformation. I was compelled to face many surgical interventions, most of them being but some experiments performed on me, without any visible traces of my status improvement. Later, after I grew older, my only wish was to get well and I was determined to undergo as many surgical interventions as needed to get well. My parents were always there to offer me moral support together with some physicians who also kept encouraging me. After I was operated on for 38"~ time, one of the doctors simply told me — "We are not God" but also recommended that I should go to France in a orthopedic clinic. Two years ago, being financially supported by some kindly hearted and faithful people I got to the orthopedic clinic in Reims, France, where I underwent several investigations. The French professor there encouraged me and told me that there are 80% chances for me to get recovered. Presently, I have their acceptance and I am being scheduled for a surgical intervention. My case was taken over by newspapers and one of the television channels, Antena I and presented in one of their shows called Observator, on May, this year. The embarrassing problem is that I get from the Romanian State only an amount of 500.000 lei (that is $ 17) per month as a social assistance or pension and this means it would take me more than 10 year to save this monthly amount as to cover the hospitalization costs in France, namely 100.000 FRF. As in the nearest future I am scheduled for an operation in France, there was nothing left to me to do but making a humanitarian appeal in hope that there, somewhere, in the wide world I could find some people with a heart in their bodies and God in their souls, willing to help another human being.
