This is a basic introduction to what the Transgender community likes to call "Gender 101". For many this is their first contact with a person who is transgendered. Presented here are many references that try to explain transgenderism some of them are medical, some are personal stories of transgender indiviuals and some are personal stories of medical professionals who are also transgendered.

The main fact to remember is that sexual orientation and gender are separate. Sexual orientation is about preference, who you are attracted to and gender is about identity, what you feel inside. For most people, sex and gender are "In Phase" but for the transgendered person the are "Out of Phase". Think of it as looking at a row of telephone poles, if you stand in line with them you only see the first telephone pole. But, if you step aside you can see the other telephone poles. It is like that for a transgendered person sexual orientation and gender are two different entices for them.

Lastly a person who is transgendered is not necessarily sexual active and promiscuous. Some are, but most are in monogamous relationships or celibate.

The Lady in the Mirror

Heart skips a beat.
    Stomach flutters.
         Breath is lost.
I see me.
    I am whole.
         I am one.

This web-page used the research data from the G.I.C.N.E. for the past 28 years to look at the profiles and answer the question "Are Transsexuals Crazy?" http://www.drbanks.com/serious/crazy.html and her master's thesis on "A Study of the Components of Gender Identity" at http://www.drbanks.com/thesis/masters.html

These organizations have some good papers written about transgenderism and are a good starting point in understanding.

Sometimes we just stumble across a web-site that is worth its weight in gold. Here is one of them. It's from the Children's National Medical Center and it is entitled "If You Are Concerned About Your Child's Gender Behaviors: A Parent guide". If you have any concerns about your child or a family's member gender identity then we strongly recommend read this guide.

Trans-

Trans- prefix on or to the other side of, beyond, over, across || from one state to another.

I look in the mirror and I see a man.
I blink, and I see a woman.
But, I am I.
I don't feel any different.
How can I be both?
Can both survive?
Will one have to be destroyed, in order for the other to live?
Will I still be me?

Soldier's Girl

The Fork in the Road
I stand at a fork in the road.
One path is worn smooth and well used, the other is rocky and rutted.
My old friends hail me as they walk past on the main road.
My new friends say, don't be afraid, that they will guide me around the rocky places.
Both paths vanish not far down the road, over a crest of a hill.
Hiding their secrets of what lies ahead.
I think maybe that I can go down one for a ways and cut over to the other.
But, between the two are brambles and thorns.
I look between the paths and know that I have to make a decision.
I hesitate and don't know which way to choose.
My reason pulls, towards the well-traveled road.
My heart pulls the other way, towards the rocky road.
I must choose before it's too late and time passes me by.
