Bioremediation-1.the use of biological agents, such as bacteria or plants, to remove or neutralize contaminants, as in polluted soil or water. 2.The branch of biotechnology that uses biological processes to overcome environmental problems. 3. The act of treating waste or pollutents by the use of microorganisms (as bacteria) that can break down the undesirable substances.
This project is inspired by Meg Perry's effort to help restore the coastal area after the destruction caused by hurricanes Katrina and Rita. She was killed in a tragic traffic accident in December of 2005. Common Ground has been in the New Orleans area to help rebuild. Their efforts are inspiring and honorable. I have been working closely with Common Ground volunteers to learn the methods involved in the creation of a bioremediation garden on my own lakefront campus. I believe that my university is responsible not only for assisting in rebuilding the city but also for researching and developing programs to assist the immediate communities it supports. Common Ground has expressed its wish for our bioremediation garden to become a community gardern after the pollutants have been removed. I, along with other caring individuals have begun organizing the Rootbound project. I will list those individuals or groups who have expressed interest in contributing to the project.

This is what I envision. However, it will take long-term participation in the project to ensure its life-term. We will have to build a team dedicated to keeping this thing alive. We should probably consider a Campus Community Garden organization. Students are becoming more aware of the need for conservation, I think this will work well. Those interested can send me an email and let me know which list they might like to be put on. Thank you all so much.
