So you wanted to know more, eh?
History
Located on 82 Blvd de Clichy in Paris (France, not Texas!!), the Moulin Rouge's career started on the 6th of October, 1889 (though some sources state the 5th), but it did not exactly become a full-fledged dance saloon until 1900. Here, as in the movie, a wild world flourished, lessening the gap between rich and poor by bringing them together while they let loose.
Built by Joseph Oller and Charles Zidler, it was opened to coincide with the World's Fair, or Universal Exhibition, going on in Paris at that time, which was to showcase the city's new landmark-- the Eiffel Tower.
The Moulin Rouge really was "a place where the rich and powerful came to play with the young and beautiful creatures of the underworld", as the movie states. "Chahuteuses", or girls who danced the Cac-can (which was invented at the Moulin Rouge), provided a show both onstage and on the dancefloor. The girls kicked up their heels (which may be an understatement), showing off their at times split knickers (!!!).
Right, that's all I've got, but there is much more you can find out if you click on the links below.
