Diabetes Education 2002 Dictionary
This dictionary of terms is unique. as it takes many of the common ideas and common words and tries to explain them.

Abscess: A condition where the body develops pus pockets .The ketones in the pus dissolve and creates more putrid tissue. There is no where for the pus to go, so it continues to eat away at other healthy tissue.
Alpha glucosidase inhibitors: A medication that prevents digestion and absorption of glucose from the intestinal tract.
Amputation: The surgical removal of an appendage or part of the human body.
Beta Cells: The cells in the pancreas that produce insulin.
Biguinide: Metformin Glucophage
Diabetes: A chronic condition of the metabolic and endocrine system whereby the body does not produce or sensitize insulin for carbohydrate metabolism.
DM: Diabetes mellitus
Glucometer: A hand held unit that measures the amount of glucose saturation in a drop of blood that represents the blood glucose volume.
Humalog: An analog of human DNA created insulin.
IDDM: Insulin dependent Diabetes Mellitus
Insulin:  A hormone enzyme that is necessary for the conversion of carbohydrate to glucose.
Isle of Langerhans: Home of the Beta cells
Keto Acidosis: is a condition where the insulin regulation is compromised. Such as severe illness.
Ketones: An acid that the body creates from the chemical conversion of glucose dissolving elements on the body and creating an acetone derivative.
Lancet: A small  pin like object used in a device to obtain a drop of blood
Lente: Brand or style of natural animal insulin
Lispro: Human analog insulin
Metformin: Oral anti diabetic medication for the prevention of the liver releasing glycogen. Glucophage.
N: Intermediate insulin
Nephropathy: Kidney failure and disease from ketone destruction in uncontrolled or poorly controlled DM
Neuropathy: lack of or hyper sensation, tingling and numbness. Destruction of nerve sheaths and nerve endings in uncontrolled or poorly controlled DM.
Pancreas:  Endocrine organ that produces insulin.
Plasma: Pure fluid for transporting the blood cells.
Post Prandial: After meals
R: regular insulin. Fast acting
RBC: Red blood cell
Retinopathy: destruction of the eye, specifically retina. From uncontrolled or poorly controlled DM.
Rosiglitazone: Oral medication that is called an insulin sensitizer. Avandia,
Swab: Alcohol saturated pad
Sulfonylurea: An oral anti-diabetic that encourages the pancreas to secrete more insulin. Glucotrol
Ultra lente: Human origin insulin extra long acting.
Whole Blood: Immediately drawn blood with all elements.
