| The Donna High School Mariachi was founded in the fall of 1993 by its current director, Joe Valenzuela, as a curricular component within the Donna High School Fine Arts Deparment. Comprised entirely of Donna High School students, the mariachi program has grown from ten students in its first year, to well over one hundred fifty. Students are offered three levels of mariachi music: Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced. Students entering the performing group must, after audition and acceptance, maintain a high level of academic achievment in order to remain in the "First Group." Their extensive practice and performance schedule also demands a great deal of their free time. Mr. Valenzuela is assisted by Mr. Daniel Lopez. The Donna High School Mariachi has performed throughout the State of Texas as ambassadors of good will and is a symbol of pride within their own community. They have placed in every competition they have entered. Receiving consistent Superior ratings in the region and State level of the UIL Solo/Ensmeble contest, they are quickly gaining a reputation of excellence. Through their music, they are continuosly trying to instill self-esteem, to develop a sense of community in each young performer, and to promote pride in their cultural background. The Donna High School Mariachi is an excellent example of the best in our youth. |
