Hi Tony
This is my re-working of your general series of lessons on 'Making A Web Site'. This is the third of three lessons on making a web site.
Introduction
We will now put the pages created in the desktop folder Website on the web. This involves transfering the information from our computer to another that will be the host. This is exactly the same as adding email attachments, only the file stays on the Yahoo computer for the other person to view.
Setting up a Geocities Free Account
The accounts are free, like Yahoo email. We just need to decide on a name and location on their site. This is called the address. The lesson assumes you have a Yahoo email account. If you do not have one, follow the instructions in the appendix at the end prior to starting this lesson.
1) Open your Netscape or Internet Explorer browser. Check that work offlline is NOT ticked, as we left it the last lesson. This will mean we can connect live, as usual.
2) Enter http://geocities.yahoo.com/home/ in the address window to go to geocities.
3) Select Sign up for a free web site. Fill in personal details as required. For you site name select an name in the computer area and name it something you have already chosen. This part can be tedious as most names are taken. Dont worry if the name is long. We are not after getting lots of people to visit the site, just to give them the name. If you already have a geocities site then you cannot get another one. In this case use the file manager to create a new folder and follow the remaining directions.
4) Click on File Manager, currently this is in the upper right corner with Easy Upload, HTML Editor and Site Statistics. We could use one of these to build our site, but we would learn a method that applies only to Yahoo and Geocities. Using the File Manager is close to using generally used site access programs.
5) Click on Open File Manager to access your new site. Make sure that the top button with Show...HTML...JPG...GIF..Other is ticked.
6) Put in the pages we created in the Website folder. Click on the Upload files button on the right side of the blue lines at top or bottom of the list of files (your files are not there yet, but you will see my point when you put some in. This part is just like adding attachments to emails, only you get to add 5 at a time (much easier!).
7) Click on the Browse button to the right of the unfilled boxes and find the desktop folder, then the Website folder. In that folder seleect index.htm and Open.
8) Repeat for page1.htm and page2.htm so 3 files show. Now click the Upload button. It is small and in the centre below. When you are finished you can upload more files or return to File Manager. Click the latter, click on File Manager. You then see the three files listed. Click view to see how the look. Click on index.htm first then on that page click page1.htm and page2.htm in turn. Well done! thats it, you have created a basic web site. Just keep modifying these and updating from the Website folder to stay current.
Happy websiting. If it does not work email me at [email protected]
Any questions or problems email me back. Douglas
