Mirpur city is situated in south east of islamabad at 1.30 hour run, linked with GT road at dina at a distance of 1/2 hour.Mirpur city is located at the bank of Mangla lake and being newly constructed and having every facility for a city that gives an impressing look.
District head quarter hospital Mirpur(A.K) used to be a 100 bedded C.M.H., 60 beds wer kept for civilian. In 1981 it was converted to D.H.Q hospital and was taken over by AJK government. 50 beds wer added as Gynae/Obst. unit in 1986, 100 bedded surgical unit with operation theater added in 1998., 50 more beds are recently added in the shape of K.I.C(Kashmir institute of cardiology).
The D.H.Q.H is one of the well equiped hospital in the Azad kashmir. It has every facility to help patient to get the treatment. It is a 300 bedded, full dieted and teaching hospital, providing health care services to a population of 1.2 millions (Distt.Mirpur,Distt.Kotli and Distt. Bhimber).

An NGO (AFBI) has established a dialysis centre after renovation of old operation theatre building of D.H.Q hospital Mirpur. expenditure on renovation is aprox. 0.9 million. NOOR foundation (U.K) has donated 04 dialysis units. Overall responsibility of maintenance of dialysis centre has been taken up by NGO.Specialist cover will be responsibility of the hospital administration.Some of the the staff will be appointed by NGO and their salaries will be arranged out of NGO fund.
D.H.Q Hospital Mirpur is recognized as teaching hospital since 2001 for the following disciplines.

-Neuro surgery.
-Medicine.
-Teaching and training of nurses.
-Training of paramedics in different fields.
