Dana Howell, Composer
Biography:
Dana Howell (b. 1979) graduated from Carnegie Mellon University in 2002 with degrees in clarinet performance and composition, then earned a Master of Music degree in composition at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music in California.  He is currently working toward a doctoral degree in composition at the University of California, Los Angeles.  He has written music for a wide range of ensembles, including string quartet, orchestra, wind ensemble, chorus, and various solo instruments and ensembles. Equally comfortable on the concert stage and in the studio, Howell has studied the art of film composition with notable film composers Paul Chihara and Charles Fox.  His new composition for Orchestra, "Elegy" was recently featured on a live radio broadcast of the UCLA Philharmonic on K-Mozart from the Los Angeles County Museum of Art Bing Hall.

While at Carnegie Mellon, Dana Howell studied  composition with
Nancy Galbraith and Leonardo Balada.  Other notable teachers from Carnegie Mellon include Profs. Reza Vali (orchestration) and Don Wilkins (fugue).  He also studied extensively in the Dalcroze Eurhythmics program at CMU under Dr. Annabelle Joseph.

Howell also spent a year teaching in the Pittsburgh Catholic Schools, and in the summer of 2003 studied at the
American Conservatory at Fontainebleau, France, with teachers Andre Bon, Marco Stroppa and Isabelle Duha.  He is currently the music teacher at St. Timothy School in Los Angeles, and is a Teaching Associate at UCLA.
