APPLE SCANNER

Install "Scanner 3.0" system extension from Apple
The application, AppleScan 1.0.2, which one can also download from that web site won't run without it. Apple Scanner and Apple OneScanner are the flat-bed black and white scanners that ran with the Mac Plus, and cost $1,000 when new.

TRANSITION FROM THE ARABIC MAC TO ARABIC ON A PC

Unfortunately nobody has made an Arabic HTML word processor like Arabic Word for the PC, and Internet Explorer 5.5 and above is almost unrivaled for its ability to read Arabic HTML text on the internet, even if you have a computer without Arabic fonts(ie. an Arabic system). So, reluctantly, one must buy Arabic Windows 98 Full Edition and Arabic Word 2000 and put them on an old PC if you want to make internet home pages cheaply in Arabic.

STEPS

1. On a new PC, with English windows, you can make a place for another system with System Commander.

2. Install Arabic Windows 98, putting the floppy disk in first to activate the CD rom drive on a minimal system. As of April 28, 2002 Windows 98 is the most advanced Arabic Windows system made by Microsoft.

3. Have the Arabic Windows 98 installer CD ready and put it in when requested. I think you only have 30 seconds to do this.

4. Choose Arabic Enabled unless you want everything in the Windows desktop to be in Arabic. This way others who want to run regular windows programs in latin script won't be lost on the desktop.

5. Installation takes about 30 minutes.

6. There are some little things you have to keep the disk for to install:
a. To install French keyboard, right click on the language icon at the bottom right of the desktop, go to properties and add French. You will be prompted to enter the Windows 98 CD.
b. To install "Publish"--not as good as Front Page Express, which they no longer provide--for creating home-pages in the network of an office, for example, you will also have to put in the CD when requested.

MICROSOFT WORD 2000 ARABIC

1. Install Arabic Word 2000 from the CD
2. Go to Programs/Office Settings/Language and select English. You will then be prompted to put in the CD again so that Word can have the English menu if you want it.
3. IMPORTANT: Go to the Internet and download the "Office HTML Filter 2" update to convert an Arabic Word text into HTML. The filter would also work if you mixed French, with its accents, with your Arabic, and of course English. This way you can post Arabic on internet home pages. The Office Update,"Office HTML Filter 2," surprisingly, doesn't come with the Word 2000 CD. Without it, when you say "save as web page," Word converts it to HTML that can only be read by another Arabic computer. I like what the internet site of Al-Jazeera TV says about Arabic text: "It's the natural way of doing things."
Quoting from al-Jazeera:

"Why Arabic Text ?

Now you may ask: why do not you just display the Arabic pages in your site as an images?.

The reasons are compelling:

Loading time for the Arabic text is much faster than images
Using text will help you copy and paste Arabic web content into your documents.
You can search Arabic web pages for items you are looking for.
Printing text gives much better quality than images.
Finally, this is the natural way of doing things!."

of how to get your latin script internet browser to read
Arabic text. If you have a home computer, do this,
as many institutions with public computers,
such as the universities, do not do this
and you can't read Arabic newspapers at such places
unless the "sysop"(system operator) can be convinced to adjust
internet explorer to do Arabic.

MANY PUBLIC COMPUTERS HAVE NOT PUT ARABIC IN THEIR ENGLISH INTERNET EXPLORER 5.5 OR NETSCAPE 6. REQUEST THEY DO SO.
