Andrea Quarantillo,
INS District Director
Sunday January 12, 2003
Dear Director Quarantillo,
At a student-organized conference here in Ann Arbor, Michigan, against the impending
war on Iraq, I learned of the case of the pro-Palestinian activist and radio
commentator, Farouk Abdel-Muhti, who is in INS detention in Patterson, New Jersey,
close to where I did my undergraduate studies at Princeton University.
His apartment was raided, without a warrant, by INS agents while, at the very
same time, he was on his radio show. Then, later, he was arrested, in April and
is now threatened with deportation.
This is to plead with you to release Farouk Abdel-Muhti now and drop all deportation
proceedings against a man who is only a threat to the pro-Israeli debaters.
As Voltaire said, in essence, we must support the right of freedom of speech
whether or not we agree with what they say. Deportation and imprisonment of Farouk
Abdel-Muhti is a violation of freedom of speech.
Sincerely,Denis Hoppe
