1. Keep shrubbery cut below windows to deny hiding places to unsavory characters.
2. Use motion detector lighting to frighten away trespassers and animals. Remember when a light turns on, people assume someone switched it on. Motions detectors are $10 and up. Also, motion detector lights are very convenient when you enter or leave your home. Lighting is a major deterrent to criminal or mischievous activity. Use several motion detector lights. When your property lights up like a spaceship has landed, it deters such activity. 3. Make sure your street lights are burning, if not report them to Georgia Power at 888-891-0938. Ask Georgia Power to remove limbs and shrubbery from around street lights to reduce shadows in your yard. 4. Install double cylinder deadbolt locks (keyed inside and out) on all outside doors. Deadbolt locks are $8 and up. The idea is to make your home more difficult for an intruder to enter. If it takes just a few extra seconds for an intruder to enter your home, he will decide that the risk is too great. Most intruders are looking for a quick and easy opportunity. 5. When away from home install a timer that will switch an inside lamp on and off at regular or random intervals. Timers are $6 and up. 6. Install fencing, at least five feet high across the back of your property. Simple welded wire fencing costs about $30 for fifty feet and metal posts are about $4 each. You may wish to connect your fence to your neighbors fences thus preventing trespassers from cutting through the center of your block. 7. Place security alarm, video camera or "Beware of Dog" stickers or signs on your property, even if you do not have a security system or dog. No one will know except you. 8. Let trusted neighbors know that you want them to be very nosey. Inform your neighbors of any break-ins in the neighborhood so they can be extra watchful. 9. If you are at home alone, you should consider a dog. Dogs are very protective and their barking will deter prowlers. Please determine for yourself if these suggestions are appropriate for your situation. If you have any other simple home security suggestions, please email them to the DHNA at [email protected] |
