The wonderful thing about the Three Rivers Heritage Trails is the great views of the city, the rivers, the bridges and hills. Seeing a boat pushing barges in one of the rivers or seeing some of the gigantic restored steel mill machinery by the Station Square Trail on the south side gives a visitor an idea of the industrial heritage of the city.
We started riding at the eastern end of the 3 mile long Eliza Furnace Trail just off Second St. south of Schenley Park in the Oakland section of Pittsburgh. The parking area connects to both the Eliza Brook Trail and the Panther Hollow Trail which goes through Schenley Park. The Eliza Furnace Trail is near the parking lot, but the Panther Hollow Trail is a short distance away. There are signs to get to the Panther Hollow Trail but some of them have been vandalized. The 1.5 mile Panther Hollow Trail is pretty as it goes through the park which has several nice roads for bicycling. Probably, visitors to Pittsburgh would enjoy the Eliza Furnace, North Shore and South Side Trails more because of the great views of the city, the rivers, bridges and hills.
