This is a 16 mile trail with a good surface of crushed limestone, except for about 2 miles of asphalt near the middle. It follows the Juniata River in Central Pennsylvania; the western and eastern ends are near Rt. 22 about 8 miles east and 16 miles east of Hollidaysburg, respectively. This is a very rural trail, the only town is Williamsburg about 6 miles from the western end. The only restaurants are in Williamsburg and in Alexandria near the eastern end. There are portable toilets at the eastern end and at Williamsburg. The only place we saw drinking water was at Williamsburg. This trail is beautiful along the entire route; it is almost always close to the river and is shady. The trail follows the route of a canal along the river built in the early 1800's. It was abandonded and replaced by a railroad about 1850. A series of signs along the trail relate the history.

The trail is always close to river. It is well shaded and crosses few highways and only goes by one town, Williamsburgh. It is a beautiful and rural trail. The history of the canal and railroad are very interesting and are described by several historic markers.

Go to the Lower Trail homepagefor a map, with parking area, history and photos of the trail.

The Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources has a small map, descriptions, list of trailheads, and photos of the trail.

Here are some pictures of a ride on the trail.
