We started at Franklin at the southern end of the Samuel Justus Trail and the northern end of the Allegheny River Trail. The access point, which has a picnic pavillion and portable toilet, is on the east side of the river on Rt. 322. There is a bicycle and roller blade store on Rt. 322 nearby.
The page on the Justus and Allegheny River Trails has much specific information on these trails, including directions to the access points at Franklin and Oil City. We made the round trip to Oil City which is about 9 miles north, the the next day rode the Allegheny River Trail south.
